ABSTRACT

This research arises from the need to know the elements that have an impact on the audiovisual competencies of adolescents during the confinements provoked to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The purpose is to diagnose the development of audiovisual communication skills among Ecuadorian adolescents as a contribution to sustainability, based on the intervention of educational actors. The methodology is qualitative, with a descriptive approach. The instruments used were: focus groups with parents, students, and teachers from public and private institutions in Ecuador;semi-structured interviews with experts: and non-participant observation. It can be concluded that adolescents acquire audiovisual skills, processes, and languages autonomously before entering college, but they do so without the social context, ethical values and responsibilities that should be part of complete media learning. The demands of online learning during the pandemic have resulted in the development of skills and attitudes, but they have not led to full media literacy. It is pertinent to provoke innovations and updates in the curricula of higher education, specifically in the careers of social communication, in order to be aware of the technological changes on the basis of deontological principles and in favour of democratic values, tolerance, and responsibility with the sustainability of nature and people. © 2023 by the authors.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the research is to analyze the higher academic offerings in communication and related fields in the Andean Community to determine if there is a relationship with the potential demands of adolescents who developed competencies to generate and exchange audiovisual content since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. The research question is: should the academic curricula related to audiovisual and media competence of Andean universities change or be updated to meet a new profile of young people who know the audiovisual language? The methodology is qualitative and descriptive through content analysis of the academic curricula of the leading universities in the international rankings that classify Latin American universities, as well as semi-structured interviews with experts in higher education in communication in the region. In the case of communication studies and related areas, it happens that young people, before entering university, learn autonomously many of the techniques, processes and audiovisual languages that feed the contents of the current offer, but it is an instruction acquired without the corresponding social contexts, deontological senses and responsibilities. The denominations of the titles of the careers are classic, the formation of media competence is not alluded to or implicitly assumed, the same happens with the names of the courses taught, they respond to common or generic programs of professional formation with emphasis on journalistic production and audiovisual contents. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

ABSTRACT

In the scenario marked by digitalization, digital media have found spaces that allow them to face labor problems and at the same time face the risks and vulnerability that threaten the security of journalists. Therefore, this research is established to know some issues related to security: economic limitations of access to public information, censorship, and self-censorship in the journalistic exercise in Ecuador. The observation was carried out within the framework of the pandemic unleashed by the presence of COVID-19 and its variants. For the execution of the research, the qualitative methodology was applied with semi-structured interviews to investigative journalists of consolidated digital native media. Among the conclusions are noted that the pandemic brought with it labor precariousness;however, digital media have managed to maintain themselves with external funds or own resources. For the journalistic exercise, public information becomes a severe concern because access has been restricted, and there is little transparency in its disclosure. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

ABSTRACT

The purpose is to find out the public’s perception of the information transmitted by COVID-19 in Ecuador’s conventional social communication media between March and June 2020, since it is the first country in the region to be affected. The questions: Was there a lack of information?, What information would citizens like to receive? and What strategies should the media implement?” are answered through a qualitative methodological approach of a descriptive and relational type. The research techniques are survey, content analysis, interviews with experts and description of digital publications. The conclusion is that there was little transparency and little research. According to those surveyed, the media should not subordinate deontology to immediacy. The urgency of contrast, consistency, multiple sources and educational approaches is shown. Stories require a humane approach and build transmedia stories. What happened in Ecuador is a reference for other realities, for example in neighboring countries of the Andean área. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

During the sanitary emergency in the worldwide by the COVID-19, we faced a serious scenario. However, as in other situations, the acquaintances memes arise;images, videos or even audios full of humor that, in moments of sadness, anguish, anxiety provide a little relief. Through this qualitative research with an exploratory approach, positive or negative emotions are analyzed, specifically the levels of humor or laughter that these graphic resources generate during the first months of the pandemic in Ecuador. The hypotheses are: 1. Memes make people improve their anxiety levels during isolation caused by the health emergency, and 2. There is little acceptance of memes that belong to political figures. The results show that 89.5% of participants improved their anxiety levels after observing this sample of memes. © 2020, Associacao Iberica de Sistemas e Tecnologias de Informacao.
